Reviews

ZorbaZen House was formerly called Villa Pelagos. Since we became the proud owners of this gem, we have renamed and renovated it – we also updated furniture, decoration, kitchen equipment etc. These reviews comes from people who stayed at the house before we took possession – but we can assure you that it is even better now!

We highly recommend Zorba Zen House for a quiet and peaceful getaway

”Before we booked, we read every review about Zorba Zen House and even though we knew that it must be a beautiful place, we were more than happy being there. It is such a beautiful place in a greek village in the mountains with wonderful views to the sea from everywhere. As we were here in June, nature was still green and at the house wonderful flowers were growing, its put together with a lot of love. The 3 terrasses are great, if you stay at the house all day long, you can find nice and quiet places in the shade and the beaches nearby can be reached fast by car. We really enjoyed everything here: this wonderful house, the peacefullness of nature, outragious night skies, very nice people of Kerames, the good greek food. The directions Jivan and Alf shared with us were very helpful as well as Paul who was always there if we needed something. The kitchen is well equiped, nice beds, everything you need is available. We highly recommend Zorba Zen House for a quiet and peaceful getaway.” Ute, Germany

The perfect place to relax from busy allday life.

As soon as we arrived it felt like I came home. The house was lovely, clean, well kept and had a wonderful wiev all around. It was quiet and you rellay could relax. The water on the south coast is something extra and also the nice beaches. Genuine tavernas with good greek food and not at all touristic is really something I value. I would more than anything return to villa Pelagos.

It´s for real – the pictures don´t lie!

As said in all the review written before, the house is situated in the most fantastic settings. The sunset over the blue mountains and Plakias bay in the west has no comparison and in whatever direction you look the views are stunning. The house is located just on the sourternmost edge of the village Kerames, facing the sea. Just a minute’s walk up the narrow streets takes you to the center of the village with the church and the village square hosting a mini version of the Spili drinking fountains. Although truly part of the village, the house is built in a way that make you feel total privacy when sitting on either one of the large terasses.

The house itself is clean, well looked after and equiped as described in the ad. It gives you exactly the right ”greek” feeling with it’s white washed thick stone walls, blue doors and deep window nisches. The standard of equipment isn’t exactly swedish but that’s part of the charm and most important, everything works OK.

Although close to the sea, you definitely need a car to get to the beaches. With many beaches to chose from, Ligres and Preveli became our favourites during our two and a half weeks stay at the house. We especially liked the laid back feeling at the taverna by the end of the road at Ligres.

When renting a privat house, issues concerning contacts with the owner, payment, and how to fix upcoming problems during the stay is of equal importance to views and beaches. When renting Villa Pelago everything has worked great, from the first contact with the owner and payment routines, to on site help when we needed help getting the AC started.

Thank you for letting us stay in your house – it gave us a great opportunity to explore Crete beyond the hotel gardens and all-inclusive wristbands.

Idyllic Crete

5 out of 5

We spent an idyllic week in this beautiful, traditional house perched on the edge of a small village overlooking the Libyan Sea. We will treasure the hours spent there — the dazzling views of the sea and islands, the terraces and gardens draped in honeysuckle, jasmine and bougainvillea, with ripe apricots and cherries, and the sweet cats who visited. My husband, 13 year old daughter and I all thoroughly enjoyed our time here and wished that we could have stayed longer.

This is the perfect place to get away from it all, unplug or use a base for exploring the southern beaches, Phaestos and other sites. We liked going to Ligres beach, which was only a short drive away, with few people, beautiful, blue waters and two good tavernas. Spili is not too far away for groceries, ATM’s and WiFi, although it would be a good idea to stock up on provisions in Iraklio or Rethymno before heading out to Kerames.

The owner was very attentive and communicative and provided great information on the house, local beaches, restaurants, services, driving in Crete, etc. The caretaker, who lives in a nearby village, greeted us and made sure that we were well situated.

Highly recommended and we hope to return!

 Heaven on Earth

Fantastic Crete! This is heaven on Earth if you are looking for peace and tranquality! It appears to us that Crete isn`t affected much at all by the financially crisis in Greece, as it was ”business as usual” whereever we went.

Deserted Beaches!

Had a fantastic 3 weeks. The coastline is so underdeveloped and we often had the beach to ourselves!

The views from the Villa are breathtaking.

Great Tavernas……………A wonderfully peaceful holiday.

Going Back in Time

We’ve had a fantastic time here in crete. It really is like going back in time. We even saw a lovely gentleman putting is shopping on the back of his donkey outside the supermarket. (Now, that’s something you don’t see outside Asda!)

Everyone has been so friendly.

We’ve swam & snorkeled in the sea every day. Our favorite beaches are Triopetra and Ligres where the Tavernas are fab and good value. We had fun collecting sea urchin shells, saw lots of fish and an Octopus and a Moray Eel. The large sand dune is quite amazing and fun to run down as the sun starts to set.

We loved our time at the Villa. Thank You for sharing it with us!

Our terrace ends in the middle of the Universe.

Best views we have ever had, almost matched by the views at night. Enjoyed the house and the artistic touches, discovering something new every day.

We very much enjoyed the area, it’s lack of commercialism, uncrowded beaches, spectacular views, and value for money Tavernas.

Another highlight- birds of prey circling.

Our terrace ends in the middle of the Universe.

The Quintessential Cretan Holiday Experience

Stunning! The quintessential Cretan Cretan holiday experience. Our stay in the villa has been wonderful. The scenery is wonderful. A great place to get away from it all!.

Most Beautiful Place Ever

We have travelled extensively and this is one of the most beautiful places we have ever been to. The house is superb, the views are breathtaking and there is so much to see. We will be back. Amazing!

Unique

5 days only, but what a wonderful relaxing time we had. This house is so unique we thoroughly enjoyed every minute here. Unbelievable views that you never get enough of, and every guest must feel the special atmosphere. The garden/terraces-every corner a little gem. Can’t thank you enough for the experience. This is truly a place we would love to come back to.

Superb location

5 out of 5

We hadn’t planned to, but due to flight delays we arrived when it was dark. But this made the impact all the more stunning the next morning when we awoke to amazing views down the mountain and all along this quiet, uncommercialised coast. Spectacular views, almost matched by the vista of stars at night from the balcony, unpolluted by light.

The house has great character, with fascinating details, added it would seem artistically from the local environment. There was something new to discover each day.

Enjoyed exploring the local area, the quiet beaches and mountain villages. Phaestos was probably our longest trip which we enjoyed, especially the freedom to explore the site, unlike Knossos, where movement is more restricted, (but still a must to visit, which we did while staying in the north).

One of the best meals we had was at Drimiscos, the neighbouring village, where there was no menu, but you could eat what was available – which was fantastic and at great prices in a truly local setting. Good, honest, fresh, local and simple food, with great tastes, inevitably helped down with Raki.

You would need a car to get to Kerame and explore the area and preferably a small one as some of the roads, including the one getting to the house are a bit tight.

Highly recommended for a quiet, uncommercialised, Crete experience, to relax in the house, access the uncrowded beaches, the nearest a few minutes drive away or explore the mountains.

Quintessential Crete

5 out of 5

Tucked away in a quite valley on Crete’s southern shore is a perfect getaway – Kerames. With views to take your breath away without even getting out of bed it was a wonderful 2 weeks. Added to that the friendly greeting from Uschi and a wonderful and comfortable villa Kerames was a total joy.

We would love to come and stay again

5 out of 5

A week was not nearly long enough in this lovely villa in the most stunning situation overlooking the sea. Everything that was needed was there at the house and Kim’s directions and helpful hints made our stay a really enjoyable one. The other reviews have really said it all, lovely beaches, tavernas with food at reasonable prices, and plenty of things to see and do. The countryside in this area of Crete is breathtaking and we spent many happy hours driving around getting happily lost !

We would love to come and stay again in this very special house.

Wonderful memories

5 out of 5

The villa not only gives unparalleled views of this wonderfully wild, beautiful and underpopulated area (uncrowded roads, uncrowded beaches) but itself provides a completely outfitted oasis with cool terraces graced by numerous attractive potted plants, upstairs and downstairs facilities and an appealing feline visitor. Since it is located at the edge of this small village, you will have many chances to practice your modern Greek; if that is weak, you can rely on the highly competent and efficient caretaker. It was great fun to try the various beach tavernas, among the many within five miles or so. If you tire of the seclusion, Agia Marina is less than an hour away.

Great place with gorgeous empty beaches

4 out of 5

The house is beautiful – the views were like watching a moving painting and there are three terraces to admire them from. We took our two children (eight and thirteen) and they loved it. There’s plenty of space to run around, though the steps and terraces would not be suitable for very young children.

While the north of Crete is packed with tourists competing for the last remaining patch of beach, a 15-minute drive from Kerames will bring you to gorgeously empty beaches and a warm turquoise sea. Several times we had a beach to ourselves and found shade under a large rock (welcome in the blistering heat); other times there were a few nudists around!

You can pick and choose between the beaches – some sandy, some with large breakers, others with parasols; it’s great for the beach connoisseur.

Our best meals were at the seafood taverna at Agia Fotini and a small, traditional inn about five minutes drive from Kerames – a two course meal for four with drinks only cost 25 euros for all of us.

This was our first visit to Greece and we feel lucky to have seen a corner of Crete untouched by developers. This type of holiday would suit more adventurous types who enjoy nature and tranquility – it offers a truly relaxing escape.

Ideal for relaxation

5 out of 5

Beautiful villa on the tip of a very sleepy Greek village, with two large bedrooms, all mod cons and lovely views from any of the three large verandas

The local beaches are mostly deserted, but if you want more hustle and bustle there’s are busier towns and villages along the coast or inland about 15 minutes drive away. A car is an essential, as is a confident driver for the mountain roads!

Exactly what we were looking for: a peaceful and relaxing place to unwind. No noise, no distractions, gorgeous setting.

The owner is very friendly and helpful, and we will be going back next year without a doubt. Highly recommended

Delightful house with views to die for!

5 out of 5

The house is quirky and interesting with wonderful terraces that allow you to appreciate the breathtaking views. The local area and beaches are quiet and unspoiled and Spilli is not far to collect supplies and have a drink by the fountains. We enjoyed a lovely, relaxing beach holiday here and I must say it was very good value!

The most wonderfully relaxing holiday ever!

5 out of 5

My partner and I spent 10 days here at the beginning of July. On arrival we were pleasantly surprised to find the house and location even better than expected. Quite rare from my experience. The village of Kerames is perched on a mountain overlooking the sea; the house has the best possible location, as it lies right at the foot of the village and therefore looks out at the sea and surrounding mountains. It feels wonderfully private and quiet.

Because we went early in the season the village was eerily quiet, but we were told it gets quite crowded from the middle of July when a lot of the Athenians descend to open up their houses. We found one café open (drinks & olives only) with a few locals everyone was very friendly and we shared Raki with them for the rest of the night. The deserted feeling we enjoyed but I have to say it may not suit everyone.

It’s 10 minutes drive down to the selection of beaches. One we had all to our selves and if you felt like a skinny dip no one would care. The two more occupied beaches (bottoms required) were Ligres with a great taverna perched just above the beach, a wonderful spot for lunch or dinner. The other beach at Agia Foteini I would recommend for lunch, right on the water with the waves lapping around the terrace. The sun disappears earlier here so best enjoyed in the day.

After a sunset drink at Ligres we headed back to the house for a power shower with endless hot water. Then it was just a case of deciding which terrace to have dinner on, each as stunning as the next. The house is well equipped and comfortable. The two bedrooms are simply decorated, both with mosquito nets. I was bitten a bit but my partner not at all so I guess some people are just tastier than others!

We had an adventure walking the Samaria gorge which is well worth it. However take up the all in one deals available (bus/boat/entrance fee) and don’t do what we did and drive up there, you might find yourself stranded at anyone of the pick up points!

We are sad to be home but will always keep the memories. I can hear the cicadas now crackling in the midday heat as I lie on a shaded terrace over looking the deep blue water. Out to sea two magical islands float in a shimmering mist as a bells tinkles on a distant hillside.

Already planning the next trip

Back to Nature

4 out of 5

The villa was as described, set on the outskirts of the village of Kerames. With no less than 3 terraces offering sunshine all day and some welcome shade. A car is essential. We managed OK with a small car although a four wheel drive would be better for some people. There were several tavernas within 10 to 15 minutes drive. We liked Fontini Beach, Ligres Beach and Palm Beach, all very reasonably priced. Spili is not too far for a drive in the evening for a bigger assortment of tavernas and cafes. Here you will also find mini markets, butchers and bakers for your provisions plus the usual tourist / gift shops.

To finalise if you enjoy deserted beaches, quiet roads and a laid back holiday this will suit you. If you crave the disco bars and bright lights then this is not for you.

We had a perfectly lovely holiday
